How To Deal With Bad Breath
Jul 8th, 2008 by George Mole
Finding yourself in a situation where you have to carry on a conversation with someone who has bad breath is terrible. Conversing with a person who has bad breath makes us feel nauseous and disgusted. That is why we may not be aware that our facial expression may be embarrassing to the one we are talking to.
The odour is so bad that people automatically respond adversely. This is a really hard situation to handle and most people try to move away from the disgusting smell as fast as they can. There is no doubt that bad breathe is hard for others to deal with, but as a friend, co-worker or relative of the person with the problem it is essential that it is dealt with.
Personal Duty
So, what can one do about bad breath? First of all, it is the duty of every person to take good care of the teeth and good oral hygiene should be practised, in order to avoid bad breath. Making sure that others do not suffer from your laziness and lack of hygiene is a common courtesy. The truth should be recognized by the people having the problem of foul breath, and they should try to take care of the problem the best way they can. They should enlist the help of professional dentist and doctor if they are unable to handle the problem on their own.
Inform Others
When a person is faced with speaking or dealing with another person who has bad breath it is important to address the situation rather than get away from it. Sometimes a person has a medical problem that causes them to have bad breath and they are completely unaware of the odour in their mouth or the medical problem. By telling someone they have bad breath a person can be saving another person’s life. Even though this may be a difficult conversation to initiate it is important.
The easiest way is to offer a piece of gum or mint to the person to address the situation, and then tell them politely to consult a physician to recognize what their problem is. Or a person can broach the subject of bad breath, explain its serious implications, and then offer the mint or gum. This will typically help people recognize their problem. However, some people don’t understand subtle. For these people you must be direct, and tell them that they must do something about their bad breath. It may be difficult for you to do, but you have a personal responsibility to do it.
